-
- GENERAL
- INFORMATION: Here is more information on the NetWare 386 v3.1 TRX-Net
- driver with an 8 bit Arcnet card. Here are some test
- results:
-
-
- -------------------------------------------------------------
- Under moderately light load:
-
- 8 Bit SMC PC130 | 16 Bit Thomas Conrad
-
- Utilization: 25 percent | 10 percent
- Buffers: 10 | 10
- Received packets 205,000 | 205,0000
- NO ECB's: none | none
- other errors: none | none
-
- -------------------------------------------------------------
- Under Heavy load using 2 machines broadcasting with IPXLOAD
-
- Utilization: 35 percent | 9 percent
- buffers: 254 | 10
- NO ECB's: 1800 | none
- Rec. Packets 300,000 | 300,000
- Orphaned Pack: 15,000 | 190
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------
-
- As you can see, under heavy load the 8 bit card was not
- capable of handling the traffic. This was also tested
- using the old (not supported) NetWare 386 v3.0 RX-Net
- driver and the results were similar.
-
- We have had several customers using the 8 bit card and
- having lots of problems. When they use the 16 bit
- Arcnet card the problems disappear. An important result
- is the server utilization of 35 percent compared to 9
- percent. The difference of 290 percent!! Also, the NO
- ECBs explain why customers are seeing problems.
-
- COMMENTS: The 8 bit card is not capable of handling the heavier
- load. The customers have an $8,000 operating system with
- $10,000 in hardware for a high performance system. Why
- use a cheap Arcnet card with such an incredible
- investment? Use a 16 bit Arcnet board and the problems
- will disappear.
-
- The current NetWare 386 v3.1 TRX-Net driver has problems
- with 8 bit Arcnet cards under heavy loads. The TRX-Net
- driver seems to function fine with 16 bit cards. For now
- use the NetWare 386 v3.0 RX-Net driver. The problem that
- people are seeing with the TRX-Net driver is receive
- buffers maxing out. The RX-Net driver you should use is
- the one on NetWire, not the original with NetWare 386 v3.0.
- The filename is RXNET.ZIP in Library 7.
